I’ve always agreed with that concept Ned. I’ve always thought fresh content was best including links. This post is only about things I think about based on past experiences. But here are some other things to think about since we are going a little deeper…

What’s better, a link that has been in its original place and form since the page was created or a link that seems to change here and there? To me they both seem good AND bad.

Old link: long trusted sources OR old pages could be expired (kind of like you said)

New Links on Old Pages: Updated because source has been updated and its a better page to link to or could be a sign of a rental/paid position.

But here’s something that will consider all of those thoughts.
An old link on an old page that get’s updated or linked to often.
So if you have a link on a page that’s really old, give it a couple fresh backlinks to let the bots know that this page is still resourceful and up-to-date.

I would have thought an older link was not as good. Or at least a newer link on an old site would be better than a old link. Reason; the old trusted site now thinks this is a good link, a good place to go as opposed to an old link which the site hasn’t bothered to verify still has valid content.

I am impressed, the level of thinking here is much deeper than other sites I go to that discuss SEO
