WordPress Optimization [Settings]

To www or not to www – If your website is brand-new (assuming both non-www and www both have 0 or < 20 links), pick www version. Change WordPress Address (URL) and Site Address (URL) to www version in SETTINGS > GENERAL section.

Postname Setting – In the SETTINGS > PERMALINK section, select the “Post Name” option. This way your title is prominent and dense in the URL naming. (Or, custom structure; /%postname%/)

FeedBurner – Since Google owns Feedburner, it pays to convert your feed to Feedburner, so that they know instantly when you’ve made changes to your website.

Ping List – In the SETTINGS > WRITING section, under “Update Service” add full list of ping URLs, so every time you write a post, it notifies the web.

Google Webmaster Tools – Add and verify your website at GWT, so you can see how Google sees your site. Easiest way to verify is Meta Tag option and pasting in “Header” file in the APPEARANCE > EDITOR section. But if you change templates, you’ll have to remember you did it this way. Actually, if you are proficient in FTP, that option may be better :)

  • Google Analytics – Or, you can just add script to Footer file in APPEARANCE > EDITOR section
  • WP DB Backup – Should you find yourself wishing you backed-up your blog, you”ll be happy you did

  • RSS Footer – Add a footer (with backlink to website) in RSS feed
  • Akismet – usually, already installed spam blocker used to be free (& possibly still is)
  • Category Order – Easy way to customize the order of your categories in sidebar
  • Category Text Widget – Customize text widget based on category the reader is in
  • Gravatar – Avatars for people that comment on website and for yourself when you comment on others’
  • Random Text – Text widget that randomly changes when you go from page to page or refresh
  • Multi Feed Support or FeedSmith – combine feeds or redirect them all to one (feedburner one)
  • Flickr Plugins – Pictures always make sites look better. Flickr RSS, TanTan Noodles
  • Translator – PAID – Translates all your posts and blog into other world languages
  • Topsy ReTweet Button – Used to be popular twitter button you put on blog posts
