The 1st Page of Google for “SEO Blog”

Google’s 1st SERP (search engine results page) for the term “SEO blog” is insane. It’s one of the most dynamic first pages of Google I’ve seen in a while. Every day, the positions change, title tags change ,and the competitors get more aggressive. Lovely…, this playing field is much more fun than the ones that normally take weeks to months to even see a change.

As many of my readers know, I’m trying to get on that crazy 1st page for the key phrase “seo blog”. And as most SEO’s know, examining the competition is a MUST.  A couple things I’ve noticed that I wanted to point out is the importance of the title tag, and  how the 1st page of Google for the term “SEO blog” is a bumpin’ dance floor.

As mentioned in past posts (Title Tags, SEO & Samples & Title Tags Change Search Engine Rankings), the title tags are everything. Well, not everything. But they can determine a huge portion of the value of your efforts.  In other words, if you work them right, the title tags could be one of your best weapons.

Here is a snapshot of the 1st page of Google for “SEO Blog”.

SEO Blog SERP 4 2010

First and foremost, notice how EVERY website has “SEO blog” in their title tags.

Now, notice how 4 of the top 10 websites have aggressively made their title tags ONLY “SEO Blog”. There are many reasons behind why those blogs chose to do that. But the main one is because; the only real term those particular pages are targeting is “SEO Blog”. Now for me, I can’t do that. My blog is more than just an “SEO blog”, it’s an SEO blog by James Harrison, a San Diego SEO consultant.

1/2 of the pages saying only SEO blog are actually internal blog sections of their SEO site. So theoretically, if that’s what it is, then that’s what it is. BUT, even Google has acknowledged that that is not the way to write your title tags by running themselves through their own SEO analysis/report card. Look on pages 4-7, Google has decided that they should make more use of their own title tags.

“Give the search user important clues about the page”

Are my SEO Blog competitors being too aggressive?

But anyway, I just wanted to point out how aggressive some of the sites are getting in hopes for the term “SEO blog”. Well, that’s enough for today. I’ll provide a full post on the dynamics of the 1st page of Google for SEO blog this weekend.

Remember, I’m a 1-man show competing with agencies of bloggers. (I am open to guest posts, by the way.)

  1. It seems that your SEO Blog competitors are really a little bit too aggressive. I have the same point of view if we are talking about “seo blog” phrase. More over, the very same situation is in google.pl as well.

  2. That's a pretty interesting tool (based on the features). I'll have to give it a try..

  4. Can you please explain why someone would just use SEO Blog as the only keyword phrase in their title tags?

    • Hey Massy,
Keyword density has always been an SEO factor. When your title tag only reads "SEO Blog", your title tag is saying that that page is 100% seo blog and nothing else. Title tags are labels and the more relevant your site is to what people type in, the better.

  5. Very interesting, I use longer phrases that contain my keywords, so in this example I would use something like

I find this really helps with the "natural" position of your page for given search terms but then this is only in my experience.

A cheat way to get Title tags is to look at the related searches for your main keywords so look for SEO BLOG and pick a searched phrase that makes sense, this gives you both your keywords, and an additional search phrase just in your title tag ..

Great post, I am off to read part 2 now :)

  6. Hallo, I've also noticed such a strange regularity and have no explanation for it. Once I've tried to type the same request in Google and Yahoo and the results were quite different!

  11. Wow. Interesting snapshot. With the internet growing by leaps and bounds daily, you really have to step up your game to compete. Daily competitions are too much for me – I'm glad I don't have anything named SEO!

  13. I would think that instead of just using "SEO Blog" for the title, they would include their name for some name branding. I think that they are too focused on obtaining page #1 on Google. It is my opinion that they are short sheeting themselves a bit.

For the Spunky Jones SEO Blog, I would rather end up on page 2 or 3 using a longer title that utilizes name branding. From there, I would just have to work on my on-page and off page SEO to rank higher. It will take a little longer, however, it will be well worth the wait.

    • I’m sure a high percentage of people would agree Spunky.

      • It is very important to do some name branding. That's why I use my name in the title. I my site ranks on the first page for the term "seo blog" and that is also may title, I am not giving those people anything much to implant into their memory bank. It is better to use something like, "Spunky Jones SEO Blog" for a title. Great for SEO and name branding at the same time. I want to implant my name in people's mind, because then they will also search for me using the term "Spunky Jones" or "Spunky Jones SEO Blog." This way I will pick up on some traffic from those search terms and the search engines will see that and may consider adding my name as a valid search term.

  15. To my mind it is not the 1st page of Google so dynamic – dynamic is the competition in the sphere of blogs dedicated to SEO.

  23. Found you site on 2nd page of google for the same keyword that you are trying to optimize. So keep it up – the result is not too far.

Title tage is most important and meta description, then keyword density and inbound links from relevant sites with anchor text.

  30. We strongly believe that quality will always help in long run compared to quantity. We only engage in quality link building activity for any of our campaign. Search engine is extremely sensitive in detecting spam links and a minor SEO penalty with -10 ranking will not help us to reach first page. So, we are extremely caution in building links for our campaign. Plus, Google keep pushing the relevancy bar higher each year in search algorithm.

  31. That is Unbelievable man. Thank you very much for this 2nd post.

  32. nice article.. however we must adabted to google se for good result
